Construction possibilities end at one site, begin at another

1425 E. Main St.Plumas Charter School is very disappointed to announce that plans to build a new facility on its property at Kelsey Lane and Quincy Junction Road cannot move forward. However, the school has already begun preliminary investigations into construction at a new site.

PCS Executive Director Taletha Washburn explained that although a preliminary geotechnical study was completed at the Kelsey Lane property, by the time a comprehensive engineering survey was triggered, winter weather had set in.

PCS went ahead with architectural plans in the meantime, only to find out in the spring that the engineering survey indicated earthwork to the depth of 6 feet, rather than the expected 3 feet. This work exceeded the project budget, making construction at that site infeasible.

“It is always so hard to share bad news,” said Washburn. “This setback is very frustrating for everyone. But PCS has always been resilient, and we are excited about new possibilities!”

The new possibility in this case is 1425 E. Main St., which is currently owned by the Central Plumas Recreation and Park District. This property is bordered by the Caltrans yard to the right, Pioneer Park (including the public pool) to the left, and the Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds at the back.

PCS is in discussions with CPRPD regarding lease and sale options, and an application for a special use permit has been filed with Plumas County. Another update will be released as soon as the results of the permit application are available.

The new facility would house the school’s Quincy Learning Center, as well as its business offices. PCS also operates learning centers in Greenville, Taylorsville, and Chester.

“We are so grateful for the support of our parents, students, and community members as we navigate the ups and downs of finding our permanent Quincy home,” said Washburn. She invites anyone with questions to contact her at (530) 283-3851 or taletha@plumascharterschool.org. PCS hours will be limited in July; the school will return to regular hours (8 a.m.–4 p.m. Monday–Friday) on Aug. 1.
