For the second year, the Mountain Valley Parents Club '80s prom fundraiser supports Plumas Charter School.Mountain Valley Parents Club, the support organization for Plumas Charter School, reported that the second iteration of the group’s ’80s prom event, held Oct. 5, was again successful in raising funds for the school.

Organizer Lindsey Kimzey said she came up with the idea for an ’80s prom themed event for adults in order to give friends and neighbors “a chance to dress up and have a night out.” Last year’s event was such a success that she decided to bring it back again.

“Quincy has so many wonderful community events, often at the same time,” said Kimzey. “We were excited to bring back ’80s prom for those that were unable to attend last year and for those that wanted to do it again! ’80s music and fashion are so much fun and over the top. It’s a great decade to celebrate!”

This year’s event, which was again held at the Tulsa Scott Pavilion at the Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds, boasted a bigger dance floor, an ’80s video montage, an extended photo booth, and a bigger silent auction.

Prom-themed contests returned: this year, best costume went to James Shipp, dressed as Richard Simmons; best dancer went to Rebecca Glaspy; and prom king and queen went to Leah Johns and Whitney Whiting.

Kimzey reported that in all, the event raised about $3,200 for PCS enrichment programs and activities.

She offered heartfelt thanks to her “prom committee”: Mel Strahm, Autumn Zernich, Ali Pence, Mandi Fullerton, and Melissa Gilbert. They met every week for months to plan the event. In addition, “so many others volunteered their time to help decorate, clean up, bring appetizers, and so much more!”

Kimzey said she was also grateful for the incredible generosity of local businesses. “So many amazing businesses donated that we were able to raise almost $1,000 on the silent auction alone!” The donors are all included in our list of supporters: check it out under the About PCS tab at http://www.plumascharterschool.org/about_p_c_s/supporters.

As for next year, Kimzey said she and the MVP Club are already discussing plans. “In the future we will definitely visit other decades,” she said. “Next year it will be a different theme … and we think it’s kind of amazing,” she said, with a wink.
